Cardinalis cardinalis
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Cardinalidae
One of the most popular birds in North America, the male northern cardinal is a vibrant red all over while the female is brown with tinges of red. Both have a distinctive crest on the head, mask around the face, and a reddish-orange bill. With loud and distinct calls, both male and female cardinals sing and a mated pair will share song phrases. Cardinals do not migrate, and while they do molt in late summer/ early fall, they retain their red colour and reach their height of brilliance in midwinter giving us a splash of crimson against the backdrop of our snowy winters.
