Dryobates pubescens
Order: Piciformes
Family: Picidae
The smallest and most common woodpecker in Eastern North American, the downy woodpecker is checkered black with white on the wings and bold, white stripes on the head and back. Males have a small red patch on the back of the head.
These versatile and acrobatic birds can be found in open deciduous forests, parks, and backyards. They feed on mostly insects but will also eat seeds, berries, peanuts, and suet at feeders.
Woodpeckers produce a variety calls and body signals to communicate. They also drum loudly against pieces of wood or metal to establish and defend a territory, attract a mate, and communicate between mates.
