American Crow
Corvus brachyrhynchos
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Corvidae
The American Crow is a large, sleek bird with a wingspan around 3 feet, glossy black feathers and a sturdy black bill. Whether in rural fields, city parks, forests, or suburban neighbourhoods, crows are a familiar sight across most of North America.
What really sets the American Crow apart is its intelligence. These birds are problem-solvers, capable of using tools, recognizing human faces, and remembering who’s friend or foe.
Crows are omnivores and opportunistic eaters, happily dining on everything from insects and seeds to leftovers and roadkill.
Their loud “caw” call plays an important role in communication within the flock. They live in tight family groups, often with older siblings helping to raise the next brood.
Smart, resourceful, and endlessly observant, the American Crow is one of nature’s most impressive and adaptable birds.
